Squeaky Brakes: When to Worry and When to Relax

Hearing a squeak every time you press the brake pedal can be alarming. Sometimes it's a minor annoyance, but other times it's a critical warning. A high-pitched squeal often comes from a small metal shim called a "wear indicator," which is designed to make noise when the brake pads are getting thin. If you hear a grinding metallic sound, your pads may be completely worn out, which can damage your brake discs and significantly increase stopping distances. Occasional squeaking can also be caused by moisture, dust, or even certain types of high-performance brake pads. If the noise is persistent or accompanied by a pulsating pedal or pulling to one side, it's time for a professional inspection.
